The second pass didn't find anything of interest. The first pass found some disconnected ClassIDs. It allocated the DefaultIcon and all shell commands to Wordpad. I discovered an unexpected HKCR.docxfile key that identified it as a 'OOXML Text Document'.I even modified the DefaultIcon key, but it had no effect. I examined .12, comparing it with similar keys and found nothing inconsistent.I compared HKCR.docx with HKCR.dotx, HKCR.dotm, and HKCR.docm, all of which show correctly, and their organization and content is perfectly consistent.Docx is the first listed file type associated with Winword. I checked the association list in the Registry ().One MS page suggested the OfficeScrub utility which is supposed to do a more brute-force uninstall. I did a normal uninstall and reinstalled. (3) I ran the Quick Repair and the Online Repair twice each, interspersed with the other activities. That changed the icon to the Notepad icon and back to I changed it to Notepad and back, checking the 'always use this' checkbox both times. (2) The 'Open with' context menu on a docx file offers a dialog to select the associated app. (1) There are 3 paths to the default app associations in Settings->Default Apps. The details of what I have tried before posting: The icon that displays for docx files exists only in shell.dll and shell32.dll.Д®ven our company IT support is baffled. A Word icon shows for every document type associated with Word in File Explorer (doc, docm, dot, dotm, dotx, odt, rtf)Д®xcept docx.The File Explorer context menu under 'New' has every other common Office document type listed (Excel Spreadsheet, PowerPoint Presentation, Publisher Doc, etc.).I clicked the checkbox for 'Don't show me this again' and the message stopped appearing, but the problem still exists with two observable symptoms: I have used the OfficeScrub to wipe out the installation and then reinstalled. I've gone through every path I could find (at least 4 of them) to clean up the file association. (Isn't that rather contradictory?) I clicked the link to change the defaults and it took me to Settings->Default Apps, where docx When I tried to open a docx file from File Explorer, it opened with Word 2016 (as expected), but popped up a message that Word wasn't theДefault app for that file type.

I installed Office 2016 on a new PC using a company-configured install which I'm pretty sure uses nearly all defaults. I have an issue very similar to the one reported in ,
